Description
Portsmouth Island is below Orcacoke Island in the Outer Banks chain. In the 1970s the only village on the island was abandoned and the only way to the island was by private motor boat. Our boatman dropped us off at a little dock after a trip across the inlet of about an hour and said he would pick us up 4 hours later. He neglected to tell us about the island's monster mosquitos and we had no repellent with us! After exploring around the island and the abandoned village for about an hour, we took haven in the only building that wasn't locked. While waiting for the return of the boat for our trip back to Ocracoke, I drew this altar inside the Portsmouth Island church. It looked like it was ready for Sunday service. Our little party didn't see a single other soul on the island that day. I hear that now it is inhabited again and is a much sought after getaway!
