Many of the homes on Monhegan Island were full time residences. Those that weren't served as rental cottages and houses as an alternative to staying in one of the larger inns on the island. If that is what you wanted, the cottages provided more privacy as the inns usually had family style dining and shared baths among all the guests. But there was something for everyone's taste!
