Description
Siskin/Coutts-Moriarty Camp - Coutts brings an 80 year tradition of providing high quality camp experiences that allow campers to make new friends and grow in self-esteem & self-confidence. Located in Derby, Vermont on Lake Salem, Coutts takes full advantage of the incredible outdoors.
Coutts-Moriarty Camp got its start in the early 1930's when Flora Coutts, Orleans Country's first 4-H extension agent, began work on finding a permanent home for the 4-H club summer camp. The Town of Derby came forward with an offer to lease some waterfront land on Lake Salam. The following year construction began on the dinning hall shown in the drawing. When first built this building served as the dinning hall, indoor recreation hall and upstairs sleeping quarters for the campers.
In the early 1960's 35 acres adjacent to the camp was donated. A road was built and construction began on a bunk house. This project was due to the tireless work of Marion Moriarty. Thus the name Coutts-Moriarty began. Both the dinning hall and bunk house were built with volunteer labor and mostly donated materials. The 4-H clubs held many fund raisers as well to fund both projects.
The camp has seen many changes over the years such as new buildings, the addition of a day camp and the transition from a 4-H camp to an independent camp. While the original building shown no longer exists, somethings remain the same however. Coutts-Moriarty is still committed to providing campers with a rich camp experience that will boost their self esteem and will instill values to carry them through the rest of their lives. Values such as working as a team respect for each other, a consciousness of the environment they love in are but a few. Coutts-Moriarty has been providing these experiences for the past 75+ years will continue to do so long into the future.
